Abstract

Distribution of genetic diversity in Siberian Stone pine is considered at three levels according to three within-species variation forms - individual, ecological and geographical. We studied Siberian Stone pine natural populations, plantations and clonal archive. Genotypes of model trees and clones were determined on isozyme loci using starch gel electrophoresis. In most part relation of genetic diversity and individual phenotypic variability, partially the rate of ontogenesis, at the regular environments is determined by within-species competition. If ecological variability is considered, the natural selection becomes complicated by limiting environmental factors and local gene flow. In addition to listed above factors geographical distribution of allozyme variation is determined by genetic processes due to Pinus sibirica postglacial colonization. We assumed that natural selection and genetic «background» created by gene flow are dominating factors forming the structure of genetic diversity in Siberian Stone pine natural populations. The finding attests that allozyme polymorphism can be partly involved in adaptation of Siberian Stone pine to survive in wide range of environments. The pattern illustrates natural complexity of consecutive levels in within-species genetic diversity. Understanding of biological diversity structure allows to take into account all elements and functional connections between them that is necessary for development of the species genetic resources conservation and utilization concept.
